Bedford Pumps are delighted to have won their second order to supply Fish Friendly pumps to New Zealand.
The two pumpsets are for Muggeridges Pumping Station, a new build Fish Friendly pumping station in the Pouarua area of the Piako River scheme for Waikato Regional Council.
Muggeridges pumping station is designed to provide and maintain a continued drainage service to the community and farmland which had been experiencing poor drainage and ponding due to ongoing peat settlement. This settlement has resulted in land within the area approaching sea level in some parts with the present scheme floodgate and pump outlets becoming ineffective. The operation of the new pumping station will maintain the productivity of the land, contributing to economic activity in the region.
Bedford Pumps will supply two Submersible Axial pumps from their SAF Fish Friendly Range. The SAF range of pumps have been rated as “Excellent” in a trial designed to assess their ability to comply with EU legislation brought into force to tackle the rapid decline in global populations of the European Eel. The rigorous tests were performed by VisAdvies BV, an independent research consultancy in the field of water management focusing on the environment of fish in all types of inland waterways, in a dry dock in Holland.
The two pumpsets will each provide a duty of 2000l/s at 5.5m head. To minimise construction costs the submersible pumps are being installed into a wet well canister. Each pump is fitted with Bedford Pumps’ innovative Fish Friendly impeller which enables the fish to pass through the hydraulic passages unimpeded. The pumps are supplied with lifting chains, spare parts, pump condition monitor and 200mm siphon breaker valves.
Bedford Pumps standard range of Fish Friendly pumps cover from 400 to 9,000 l/s at 2 to 14m head and are available as a submersible, direct drive or mixed flow variant. They are ideally suited for Land Drainage, Flood Defence and Fish Farm applications. Larger capacity pumps can also be designed to meet specific requirements.
