The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is the UK Water Industry’s approval scheme. Products endorsed by the scheme have been shown to comply with the requirements of the Water Supply Regulations 1999. The purpose of the regulations is to prevent misuse, waste, undue consumption, or erroneous measurement of water and, most importantly, to prevent contamination of drinking water.
WRAS approval is granted directly by representatives of the water suppliers and is therefore accepted by every supplier in the UK. The necessity for WRAS approval ensures that at each stage of the process the water supply will remain uncontaminated.
For a pump manufacturer, it is not the pumps themselves which have to be compliant but the components within them, up to and including the lubricant. To this end Bedford Pumps have created their very own barrier fluid. This clear liquid lubricant known as Bedford Pumps “Royal Purple” (BBF.302) is suitable for cold and hot water up to 85 degrees centigrade. This lubricant is officially approved as being suitable for use in contact with potable water and is listed in the Materials Section, Part Two, of the Water Fittings and Materials Directory and approved for use with drinking water under the Water Fittings Bye-Laws Scheme.
